contact manager. the name, address, phone number apps used to be something that you needed to buy. all of them had useable features like printing to an envelope or labels, etc. now the contact program that Apple provides is marginally useful.
email app. there are a few survivors but why would you use any when the free Mail app does okay mail. LookOut, err Outlook might be better. as long as you are paying for Office you might as well try out LookOut.
Photo manager apps for general purpose got dodo’d by iPhoto and that lessor Photo app. it’s too bad because Photoshop Elements should have more reach as it does so much more. except photo management is not one of those features. yes, there are photo managers but those are aimed at pro-photographers causing most people consider that free included is good enough.
the general purpose word processor. Text Edit is awesome. Pages is free. why compete with free. unless you are writing longer. then you need Word. or Scrivener. check out Ulysses. there are some other werps like Bean or AbiWord. it depends on what feature you need that free does not have. like WORD count. “one, two, THREE words… ah, ah, ah…” said the Count.
Garageband decimated the entry level DAW. which might have been a good thing. there are now a lot of wondering / powerful recording tools because GB raised the low-end bar.
